Philosophical Transactions 51 (1759).<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">This post continues our examination of Simon Schaffer&#8217;s <span style=\"color:#003366;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/302004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color:#003366;\">&#8220;Machine Philosophy: Demonstration Devices in Georgian Mechanics&#8221;<\/span><\/a><\/span> (1994). \u00a0<span style=\"color:#003366;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rational-action.com\/etherwave\/2013\/09\/01\/schaffer-on-machine-philosophy-pt-1-atwoods-machine-and-the-status-of-newtons-laws-at-cambridge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color:#003366;\">Last time<\/span><\/a><\/span>, we looked at how Atwood&#8217;s Machine was used at Cambridge as a dramatic means of convincing mathematics students of the validity of Newton&#8217;s laws, which they were expected to use to explain various physical phenomena. \u00a0Here we examine how proponents of Isaac Newton&#8217;s mechanics tried to use the machine to make points with audiences whose perceptions of the reach and fundamentality of Newton&#8217;s laws were varied and unstable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">First, though, let&#8217;s revisit some of the themes of Schaffer&#8217;s earlier works to see how this piece fits into a larger picture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">1) Schaffer has a very longstanding concern with historical actors&#8217; rhetorical efforts to construct a clearly progressive &#8220;Newtonian&#8221; tradition founded upon, and latent in, Newton&#8217;s works, and to cast themselves as the rightful inheritors of it. \u00a0According to Schaffer, in certain milieus, notably Hanoverian Britain and Enlightenment France, this proved such a powerful strategy that subsequent historians became likewise occupied with reconstructing the historical development of a &#8220;Newtonian&#8221; philosophy in the 18th century and beyond. \u00a0This historiographical legacy, <span style=\"color:#003366;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rational-action.com\/etherwave\/2009\/07\/17\/schaffer-on-cometography-pt-2-hermeneutics-and-historiography\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color:#003366;\">he has argued<\/span><\/a><\/span>, poses severe hermeneutical problems for historians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">2) Schaffer has also repeatedly highlighted the importance of debates over the reach of Newtonian mechanics, with attendant implications for theology and moral philosophy. \u00a0In particular, some forms of matter&#8212;notably fluid material (including <span style=\"color:#003366;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rational-action.com\/etherwave\/2008\/12\/28\/schaffers-got-spirit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color:#003366;\">&#8220;souls&#8221; and &#8220;spirits&#8221;<\/span><\/a><\/span>) and fire (including the &#8220;electrical fire&#8221;)&#8212;and some forms of physical activity&#8212;notably chemical, physiological, fermentative, combustive, and intellectual activities&#8212;were widely believed to not abide by Newtonian principles. \u00a0This non-mechanical physics played an important role in theological arguments. \u00a0The soul was often supposed to be composed of, or to act through, pneumatological forms of matter. \u00a0Electricity was widely suspected to be central to physiological operation, as well as a cause of, for example, earthquakes. Fire <span style=\"color:#003366;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rational-action.com\/etherwave\/2008\/11\/20\/schaffer-on-temporal-evolution-pt-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color:#003366;\">was considered<\/span><\/a><\/span> an obvious medium for divine intervention. \u00a0(Joseph Priestley&#8217;s 1777 work\u00a0<span style=\"color:#003366;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=xSRIAAAAMAAJ&amp;source=gbs_navlinks_s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color:#003366;\"><em>Disquisitions Relating to Matter and Spirit\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/span>was considered theologically radical, and was widely denounced as atheist, for its denial that souls and God operated as part of, or directly upon, the material world.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">3) Accordingly, experimental demonstrations and philosophical lectures <span style=\"color:#003366;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rational-action.com\/etherwave\/2008\/09\/12\/schaffer-on-spectacle-pt-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color:#003366;\">were often freighted with moral, and thus political, lessons<\/span><\/a><\/span>. \u00a0Electrical showmen could claim that their demonstrations directly showcased divine power, thus reinforcing clerical authority. \u00a0Similarly, the law-driven regularity of the Newtonian cosmos could, according to Schaffer (<span style=\"color:#003366;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rational-action.com\/etherwave\/2013\/05\/27\/schaffer-summarized\/\"><span style=\"color:#003366;\">such as in his 1982 film <em>Science and the English Enlightenment<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/span>), be cast as an ideal form to which society could aspire, thus likewise idealizing established political orders.* <em>Moreover<\/em>, the divine intervention apparently necessary to ensure the stability of the Newtonian cosmos <span style=\"color:#003366;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rational-action.com\/etherwave\/2008\/10\/12\/schaffer-on-temporal-evolution-pt-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color:#003366;\">reaffirmed<\/span><\/a><\/span> the active and benevolent intervention of the deity. \u00a0However, enlightened political philosophers could also hope to uncover similar sets of principles governing the functioning of societies and polities, even perhaps inaugurating a radical new political age.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12220\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12220\" style=\"width: 154px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:John_Theophilus_Desaguliers.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-12220   \" alt=\"Desaguliers\" src=\"http:\/\/etherwave.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/09\/desaguliers-john.jpg?w=240&#038;resize=154%2C192\" width=\"154\" height=\"192\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12220\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Desaguliers<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">In &#8220;Machine Philosophy&#8221; Schaffer is only sporadically concerned with the uses of demonstration devices to teach moral lessons to genteel audiences. \u00a0In this case he is more concerned with narrower intellectual debates. \u00a0Where he discusses how the devices were used to diffuse &#8220;the esoteric truths of mathematical philosophy&#8221; among &#8220;innumerate and polite social milieus&#8221; (158), it is either as a means used by patronage-seeking engineers to convey &#8220;their mastery over nature&#8217;s powers&#8221; (159); or&#8212;in a move that will be familiar to today&#8217;s proponents of popularized science&#8212;it is a tool used to recruit new members of the philosophical ranks. \u00a0In the first volume of his\u00a0<em><span style=\"color:#003366;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books\/about\/A_Course_of_Experimental_Philosophy.html?id=P5MPAAAAQAAJ\"><span style=\"color:#003366;\">Course of Experimental Philosophy<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/em>(1734), &#8220;engineer&#8221; and Newton acolyte John Desaguliers (1683-1744) <span style=\"color:#003366;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=P5MPAAAAQAAJ&amp;vq=induc'd&amp;pg=PP15#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\"><span style=\"color:#003366;\">wrote<\/span><\/a><\/span> that &#8220;a great many Persons get a considerable Knowledge of Natural Philosophy by Way of Amusement; and some are so well pleas&#8217;d with what they learn that Way, as to be induc&#8217;d to study Mathematicks, by which they at last become eminent Philosophers&#8221; (159).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">However, between different eminent philosophical circles, precisely what an experimental demonstration might and might not accomplish was a matter of dispute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Famously, throughout the 18th-century supporters of Newtonian principles clashed with those who, following Gottfried Leibniz (1646-1716), supposed matter was endowed with a\u00a0<em>vis viva<\/em>, or &#8220;living force&#8221;. \u00a0<em>Vis viva\u00a0<\/em>was a quantity understood to be conserved and imparted from one body to another. Physically and mathematically\u00a0it is recognized as a predecessor to the energy concept. \u00a0(Its quantity\u00a0was reckoned as proportional to the square of a body&#8217;s velocity.) \u00a0But it also had cosmological significance, implying that matter could be self-propelled, and also that all activity in nature could be attributed to the action of common matter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Such &#8220;materialism&#8221; and its attendant embrace of conservation principles was philosophically repugnant to those whose theology required the external intervention of souls and the divine. \u00a0Thus, upholding the fundamentality of Newton&#8217;s physical principles was also a way of asserting not only the passivity of matter, but also (counterintuitively to a 21st-century reader) the cosmological necessity of non-physical motivating forces and the attendant falsity of the <em>vis viva <\/em>conservation principle.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12221\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12221\" style=\"width: 175px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leidenuniv.nl\/en\/researcharchive\/index.php3-c=54.htm\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12221 \" alt=\"'s Gravesande\" src=\"http:\/\/etherwave.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/09\/gravesande.jpg?resize=175%2C175\" width=\"175\" height=\"175\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12221\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">&#8216;s Gravesande<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">In practice, these debates could direct major attention to experiments viewed as peculiarly illustrative, such as that performed in the 1720s by Leiden natural philosopher Willem &#8216;s Gravesande (1688-1742), where the dimensions of indentations in potter&#8217;s clay and wax made by falling bodies could be shown to depend on the distance of fall in a way that accorded with the\u00a0<em>vis viva\u00a0<\/em>principle. \u00a0But, where some might suppose the experiment quantitatively showcased the instantaneous transmission of\u00a0<em>vis viva<\/em>, opponents such as London physician Henry Pemberton (1694-1771), followed by Desaguliers, could reinterpret the experiment in Newtonian terms by emphasizing the action of Newtonian forces over a short but crucial interval of time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Later in the century, while George Atwood&#8217;s (1745-1807) machine could not settle the long-running dispute, its carefully balanced counterweights could be used to exhibit the action of retarding forces over\u00a0<em>clearly perceptible\u00a0<\/em>spans of time, but otherwise &#8220;[aping] the old-fashioned impact experiments&#8230; \u00a0No messy and incalculable potter&#8217;s clay was required&#8221; (171). \u00a0Thus, the &#8220;complex phenomena of impact on soft bodies were rendered intriguing oddities rather than doctrinally basic&#8221; (172). \u00a0The critical importance of &#8216;s Gravesande&#8217;s experiment was neutralized, and the position of the self-appointed inheritors of &#8220;Newton&#8217;s legacy&#8221; (172) reinforced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Similar issues surrounded the question of what constituted a sound engineering principle and what constituted a fundamental physical principle. On this score, Schaffer points to the rotational force experiments of &#8220;eminent engineer and instrument maker&#8221;&#8212;and\u00a0<em>vis viva\u00a0<\/em>proponent&#8212;John Smeaton (1724-1792).<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12213\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12213\" style=\"width: 368px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1098\/rstl.1776.0029\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-12213 \" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/etherwave.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/09\/smeaton-1776.png?w=460&#038;resize=368%2C438\" width=\"368\" height=\"438\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12213\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Smeaton&#8217;s rotational force experiment. Philosophical Transactions 66 (1776)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">In 1759, Smeaton <span style=\"color:#003366;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/doi:10.1098\/rstl.1759.0019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color:#003366;\">published<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0the results of small-scale experiments, illustrated at the top of this post, where he used a weight to estimate, in a &#8220;confessedly provisional&#8221; (175) way, the practical impact of friction on the efficiency of waterwheels. \u00a0These results were widely celebrated. \u00a0In 1776, though, he <span style=\"color:#003366;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1098\/rstl.1776.0029\"><span style=\"color:#003366;\">published<\/span><\/a><\/span> an experiment that he claimed minimized friction where a weight rotates a spindle attached to two lead cylinders. \u00a0According to Smeaton, the results of this experiment showed,\u00a0in accord with Leibnizian\u00a0<em>vis viva<\/em>, &#8220;that the mechanic power [of the weight&#8217;s fall] was proportional to the square of the cylinders&#8217; speed [and] that the product of the weight and its time of fall was proportional to their speed&#8230;&#8221; (Schaffer) \u00a0This, furthermore, was not a mere engineering principle, but a &#8220;universal law of nature respecting the capacities of bodies in motion to produce mechanical effects&#8221; (Smeaton, quoted in Schaffer, 176).<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12224\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12224\" style=\"width: 159px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:John_Smeaton.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-12224    \" alt=\"Smeaton\" src=\"http:\/\/etherwave.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/09\/smeaton-john.jpg?w=246&#038;resize=159%2C194\" width=\"159\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12224\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"> Smeaton<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The question of the presence of friction was critical to Cambridge mathematical philosophers&#8217; defense of the fundamentality of Newtonian principles in the face of such experimental claims.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">As we saw in the last post, these principles constituted for the Cambridge authorities unquestionable presuppositions rather than speculations to be proven. \u00a0It was, therefore, their task to interpret results in terms of these principles. \u00a0For them, friction constituted &#8220;an all-embracing resource&#8221; (173), which was constantly used to explain divergences between experiments and theoretical predictions. \u00a0Accordingly, they claimed that, factoring in friction, Smeaton&#8217;s experiment could easily be reconciled with Newtonian philosophy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Schaffer speculates that there &#8220;is at least a chronological reason to suggest that Atwood&#8217;s development of his own machine between 1776 and 1779 was in immediate response to Smeaton&#8217;s techniques&#8221; (174). \u00a0This is an intriguing suggestion given Atwood&#8217;s similar use of counterweights to equalize forces and to isolate different sources of force and resistance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">In any event, though, Schaffer points out that\u00a0in 1784 Atwood unfavorably contrasted Smeaton&#8217;s later disregard for friction with the care with which it had been measured in Smeaton&#8217;s earlier tabletop waterwheel experiment. (Although Schaffer doesn&#8217;t really mention it, no doubt it also contrasted with the degree to which Atwood had minimized friction in his soon-to-be eponymous machine.) \u00a0In making this contrast, Atwood cast himself as a superior arbiter of the crucial role friction did and did not play in relating experiment to philosophy.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12219\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12219\" style=\"width: 368px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/collectionsonline.nmsi.ac.uk\/detail.php?type=related&amp;kv=65453&amp;t=objects\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-12219  \" alt=\"Telford bridge\" src=\"http:\/\/etherwave.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/09\/telford-bridge.jpg?w=460&#038;resize=368%2C191\" width=\"368\" height=\"191\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12219\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Thomas Malton&#8217;s painting of Thomas Telford&#8217;s proposal for a single-span London Bridge (1801).
